about

“Le vent se lève! . . .
il faut tenter de vivre!"

from "Le Cimetière marin"

I first came across this poem in Hayao Miyazaki's most recent film, "The Wind Rises" and I was immediately taken with it. French poetry, particularly the poems of Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Valery, Stephane Mallarme and Chales Baudelaire, has taught me a whole new way of looking at the world. The complex and imaginative symbolism in these poems continues to blow me away.

This song is an ode to these poets, but also to Canberra, and my experience of growing up here. On one day, every year since I was very little, we would wake up before the sun and drive out to see the balloons. It's a magical thing to witness, these giant flying machines taking off all around you with bright flames.

Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises", also inspired by Valery's poem, is about aeroplanes, a lifelong obsession of his. But for me, the poem is about the hot air balloons of my childhood.

- milo.

lyrics

Taking off
goodbye to land
lighter than air
in the palm of my hand

Break of dawn
sky lighting
clouds catch fire
before subsiding

The wind, oh the wind
rocking back and forth
like a child in a cradle
I'm taking off

Teardrops hover
over a sleeping city
I remember a garden
full of waterlilies

How I dream to fly –
hot air balloons
bursting through the clouds –
and waking up too soon

Forget everything
but the horizon
and the calm wind
that's always rising
